Analysis of Two Convective Storms Using Polarimetric X-Band Radar and Satellite Data

چکیده

We analyzed two convective storms that passed over or near the Milešovka meteorological observatory. The observatory is located at top of a hill and has been recently equipped with Doppler polarimetric X-band radar FURUNO WR2120 for cloud investigations. Our analysis was based mainly on data measured in vertical cross-sections (RHI-Range-Height Indicator). Radar also used classifying hydrometeors by newly developed XCLASS (X-band CLASSification) algorithm. rapid scan geostationary satellite Meteosat Second Generation to validate measurements upper parts storms. Although an attenuation correction applied reflectivity differential measurements, typical radars noticeable. It manifested reflectivity, co-polar correlation coefficient specific phase. Nevertheless, can be analyze internal structure severe classification major innovation previously published algorithm identifies seven types hydrometeors: light rain, wet snow, dry ice, graupel, hail. uses horizontal phase, coefficient, temperature, applies fuzzy logic determine type hydrometeor. new practically eliminates unrealistic results around below melting layer provided original snow more cases, areas individual have realistic shapes compared shows reasonable study

Computer Analysis of X-Band Radar Data

Dual polarized X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data were obtained for a test site in South Carolina containing a variety of forest and agricultural cover types, as well as water and urban areas. The optically correlated images were digitized with a scanning microdensitometer using a 40 ~m aperture. Digi tal registration of the two polarizations was more difficult than anticipated due to g...

Radar-Based Analysis of Convective Storms over Northwestern Italy

Thunderstorms may cause large damages to infrastructures and population, therefore the possible identification of the areas with the highest occurrence of these events is especially relevant. Nevertheless, few extensive studies of these phenomena with high spatial and temporal resolution have been carried out in the Alps and none of them includes North-western Italy. To analyze thunderstorm eve...

Rainfall retrieval from polarimetric X-band radar measurements

Dual polarization radars have shown considerable improvement of quantitative estimation of rainfall rate and raindrop size distribution (DSD) parameters. Most studies have been done with S and C-band radars and only a few studies with higher X-band weather radars. X-band radars have the advantages of lower cost and higher differential phase shift but with higher attenuation too. Furthermore, th...

Attenuation Correction for Ka-band Cloud Radar Using X-band Weather Radar Data

In order to correct attenuated millimeter-wavelength (Ka-band) radar data and address the problem of instability, an attenuation correction methodology (attenuation correction with variation trend constraint; VTC) was developed. Using synchronous observation conditions and multi-band radars, the VTC method adopts the variation trends of reflectivity in X-band radar data captured with wavelet tr...

Assimilation of Simulated Polarimetric Radar Data for a Convective Storm Using Ensemble Kalman Filter. Part II: Impact of Polarimetric Data on Storm Analysis

i Abstract A data assimilation system based on the ensemble square-root Kalman filter (EnSRF) is extended to include the additional capability of assimilating polarimetric radar variables. It is used to assess the impact of simulating additional polarimetric observations on convective storm analysis in an OSSE (Observing System Simulation Experiment) framework. The polarimetric variables consid...
